AFS help Brú Aimsir homeless shelter open doors in time for winter

Advanced Flooring Systems (AFS) answered a SOS call from Dublin City Council & Dublin Region Homeless to urgently help renovate and open a new facility to provide much needed support and shelter for the homeless in time for winter.

Located in the old Cash ‘n’ Carry building on Thomas Street, Dublin 8, Brú Aimsir is a new homeless accommodation service that caters for 100 people has opened as the temperatures begin to drop. Brú Aimsir is overseen by statutory and voluntary bodies working in the provision of homeless services.

AFS, the industrial and commercial flooring experts, joined a number of other trades (including electric, plumbing and heating, building repairs), in answering the SOS call to help turnaround the full building renovation inside just 3 weeks.

With the tight deadline, AFS worked around the other trades, beginning by preparing the old 2500m2 concrete floor using their in-house surface preparation equipment. After aggressive preparation, AFS supplied and fitted a decorative and easily maintained Sika 264 system to the floors, rooms with a different colour applied to the large walkways.

As required, the entire renovation was completed inside 3 weeks with the new facility now open and playing a vital role this Winter.

Advanced Flooring Systems’ Adrian Rafferty explained why his company was “delighted” to work on such a vital project.

“Homeless across Ireland is increasing at an alarming rate with over 98,000 individuals and families now needing support. In Dublin alone, there are over 3,300 people in need of housing support. With the cold winter months now approaching, vital shelter, food and support is now needed more than ever. AFS was delighted to assist in the Brú Aimsir development to help ensure the provision of support for the homeless in the Dublin Area.”

Cathal Morgan from the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive explained how the facility will help.

“There’ll be 80 beds for males and 20 for females. There’s engagement through professional key workers, there’s holistic needs assessment, there’s looking at what are the alternative options for people in terms of long term accommodation.”

More beds, for couples and families who’re homeless, will be opening up in the next few weeks. Read more about the project and the people it is helping on the Irish Independent.
